Anoles, Quails, and Maybe Cattails

My Pet Quail

This is a gallery for my pet quail. It will include stories about my birds that helped me to understand their behaviour better.

First Generation

These are quail hatched/obtained in 2019. Many of them are parents of some of my other quail.

Matcha

Matcha is a female wild-type couturnix quail, and she is one of the first quail I ever owned. I ordered her and the others in her group as hatching eggs from Purely Poultry. She is very old now, but doesn't have as much stiffness as Kombucha does.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a female wild-type couturnix quail, and she, along with the other quail in the Purely Poultry group, is one of the first quail I ever owned. She is really old now, and she has some stiffness in her joints, but she is still able to play outside with the other birds. She and Matcha are best friends. She enjoys cozying up with the other quail in a pile of pine shavings, straw, or grasses.

Caramel

Caramel was a beautiful male, with magnificant plumage. He had a great personality, but he often bossed the other males around.

Earl Grey

Earl Grey passed away in 2019, probably because of a sickness that was going through my quail at the time. I was able to save most of them, but sadly, Earl Grey and a few others died. Earl Grey and Matcha were good friends.

Sugar Cube

Sugar Cube is much more calmer than the other males. He doesn't try to breed with the females very often, and he also doesn't pick many fights with the others either. Like Kombucha, he has sore legs.

Rooibos

Rooibos was the father of my gen 3 batch consisting of Boba, Tapioca, Bubble, Pearl, Mango and a few others. He was very sassy and often picked fights with other males. Sadly, Rooiboss passed away Friday October 28, 2022.

Lemonbalm

Lemonbalm was a cute little quail. She was snow-white, with blue eyes and a brown marking on the back of her head that looked like a heart. She was a sweet, slightly flighty little quail, and was best friends with Peppy, Chai, Tiny and Jazzy. She also lived with one of my female bobwhites, Fran, for awhile, and they became good friends. Although she was a shy quail, she got a bit grumpy when she got older and would growl at Boba if he got too close. When Chai passed away, Lemonbalm missed her a lot. Sadly, she passed away the same year as chai, on December 7, 2022.

Chai

Chai and Lemonbalm were very similar in temperment and appearence. Chai was white with a tan splotch on her head, and a larger one on her rump. Sadly, Chai passed away early in 2022.

Peppermint aka Peppy

Peppy was pure white, and his dark eyes showed up really well against his white feathers. This caused him to get pecked in the eyes a lot. One time, he escaped and our dog caught him and ran with him under our porch. I was able to rescue him and he recovered. He passed away due to the males picking on him.

Jasmine aka Jazzy

Jazzy was the first tuxedo quail I had, and as of 2022, the only tuxedo variety. He passed away in 2021.

Tiny

He is one of my smallest quail. He is a rosetta variety. Tiny is very friendly, and is always interested when I clean the quail coop.

Sorrel

She is my only confirmed Tibetian quail. She is a lovely ebony-colored quail and loves to sit outside with the other females on sunny days.

Second Generation

These are quail hatched/obtained in 2020. Some of them are parents of a few of my other quail.

Muzio Clementi

Muzio was named after a famous piano composer. He passed away early in 2022.

Moomoo

She was Tiny's daughter. Moomoo was very sweet and good friends with Mochi. She passed away in 2022, possibly due to liver issues.

Mochi

She is Tiny's daughter. Mochi has an interesting white spot on the back of her head, but otherwise looks like a larger, younger version of Tiny.

Arugula

He is Tiny's son, and he inherited a lot of Tiny's characteristics. He also has a strange tendency to cover himself in mud.

Lavender

Lavender is the mother of my gen 3 batch with Muzio. She was purchased with Comfrey and Chamomile.

Comfrey

Comfrey is the mother of my gen 3 batch with Rooiboss. She was purchased with Lavender and Chamomile.

Chamomile

When she and her buddies Comfrey and Lavender were still in quarantine after purchasing them, Chamomile sadly passed away a few days after purchase. She was purchased with Comfrey and Lavender.

Third Generation

This is the 2022 generation. None of these were purchased, thay are all offspring of the previous generations. I tried a new type of legband with these guys, but unfortunately, the legbands fell off a few days after I put them on. This was frusterating, since I like to keep track of who is who for breeding. I will probably reband them soon.

Tapioca

She is a pretty rosetta variety with white feathers around her beak. Taro's sister, and the daughter of Rooiboss and Comfrey. I was able to get a better quality legband on her before I lost track of the Gen 3s.

Taro

Tapioca's sister, and the daughter of Rooiboss and Comfrey.

Boba Tea

He's smaller than many of my other males (except Tiny and Arugula), so he got picked on a lot. The others really messed up his eyes, so I seperated Boba so he could heal. Unfortunately, his eyelids healed mostly shut, so he can't really see and for this reason he is easy to identify.

Forth Generation

These guys were ordered from a breeder.

Wintergreen

She is the oldest, and isn't a pearl fee, she looks like something else. She is white with lavender-gray stripes.

Spearmint

He's a pearl fee, but he has ginger colored Manchurian markings on his head.

Pennyroyal

Pennyroyal is a male, and he has a very strange bulgy eye. He has gray Manchurian markings on his head.

Catnip

Catnip is a smaller, pretty little quail.

Licorice

Licorice is named after licorice mint.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is named after cinnamon mint.

Buttermint

Named after a kind of candy.
